Last month, the Finance Minister of Ontario Dwight Duncan made headlines by openly commenting on the possibility of a new casino in the city of Toronto. An idea that has been tossed around throughout the years, Mr. Duncan is the most senior official ever to make comments to the public about the government’s willingness to consider the idea.
The conversation with the media takes place as the government awaits the release of the strategic business review being conducted by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). The report is expected soon as the OLG wraps up its review.
For a Toronto casino to be possible, the government would have to overcome any resistant that might exist in Toronto and other communities in Ontario with existing casino properties. One such community is Windsor, which is already competing with three casinos in Detroit, Mich. and a new casino opening in Toledo, Ohio this year.
